Capybara’s Roguelike “Zelda” Release Date Has Finally Arrived

Belowthe new action RPG from Capybara Games (Super Force of Time, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP) was released on PC and Xbox One on December 14. According to a developer representative, players should be able to download Below starting at 1 p.m. EST.

In Below, you play as a little warrior who explores the caves and chambers of a mysterious island. Like other roguelikes, Below is fraught with brutal combat and death. Its environments are randomly generated. Unlike other roguelikes, Below plays out from an unusual top-down perspective that overshadows the player-character. The focus is on the vastness of the subterranean environments, inspiring an almost Lovecraftian sense of awe.

The long-awaited release date ‘Below’ is approaching

Along with crafting food, torches, bandages, and supplies, players will need to keep their lanterns well-powered with gems obtained from dead enemies or they’ll wander in the dark.

The plot of Below is a mystery for now, but here’s how Capybara Games describes it:

“Test your adventurous mettle against the procedural underground labyrinths of The Isle. Explore a vast, interconnected underworld teeming with cunning creatures, deadly traps and a mysterious shadowy presence. Survive the perils of the Deep and unearth what lies beneath. Below…or die trying. Below embraces exploration and discovery – illuminate the path ahead, find hidden passageways, and unravel the deepest mysteries hidden in the dark in your own way.”

While players will have to start over each time they die, navigating newly randomized floors, Below also has a bonfire system similar to the dark souls series, allowing rapid movement between floors.

While the chance to finally play Below is exciting enough, the game also features a soundtrack by Jim Guthrie, who created the critically acclaimed score for Superbrothers.

While the focus is on roguelike adventure, Below also includes a multiplayer mode.

Originally announced in 2013, Below was originally slated for release in 2016, but was delayed as Capybara Games moved resources to work on other releases.
